Simplifying the Tournament Journey — My Role in MADE Hoops’ Event Platform Redesign
MADE Hoops runs basketball events where registration, payments, schedules, teams, and tournament logistics all converge in one experience.
As the platform grew, so did the complexity.
I worked with the MADE Hoops team to rethink key parts of the digital experience — focusing on how parents, players, and teams could move from discovering an event to registering, paying, and understanding what came next with less friction.
My role blended product strategy, UX design, stakeholder alignment, and delivery planning to help turn a complicated operational system into a clearer customer experience.
Seeing the Gap
The core problem wasn’t any single screen.
Parents and players were moving through a fragmented journey involving event information, athlete details, team registration, transactions, and scheduling, often from their phones and often while trying to make a quick decision.
As we mapped the experience, several issues became clear:
Registration contained unnecessary friction and unclear steps.
Important information was spread across different parts of the platform.
Transactional moments didn’t always communicate what had happened or what came next.
Mobile interactions made already-complex workflows feel even heavier.
The opportunity was to stop treating these as isolated UX problems and instead design the entire tournament journey as one connected product experience.
Understanding the Experience
Before jumping into screens, I worked with stakeholders to understand how the platform operated behind the interface.
Through discovery conversations and journey mapping, we looked at where customers were getting confused, where internal teams were seeing recurring problems, and where the product wasn’t supporting the way tournaments actually worked.
I translated those findings into clearer product requirements and prioritized the moments with the greatest impact on the customer journey.
The work centered around three interconnected areas:
Registration — making it easier for parents and teams to enter the right information and complete signup.
Transactions — improving clarity around payments, confirmation, and next steps.
Scheduling — helping users quickly understand when and where they needed to be once an event began.
Designing the Approach
From there, I redesigned the experience around a simpler principle:
At every step, the user should understand where they are, what they need to do, and what happens next.
Registration flows were streamlined to reduce unnecessary inputs and make the sequence of information feel more natural.
Transactional moments were redesigned to provide stronger confirmation and clearer next steps.
Scheduling and event information were organized around the questions families actually have during a tournament: Where do we go? When do we play? What do we need to know?
I prototyped these experiences, worked through iterations with the team, and used feedback to refine the product before moving toward implementation.
Designing beyond the screen
One of the most important lessons from MADE Hoops was that a tournament platform isn’t just a collection of digital screens.
Behind every interaction is an operational system involving players, parents, teams, events, payments, schedules, and staff.
A strong solution had to work for both sides.
That meant constantly balancing the ideal customer experience with business rules, technical realities, and the workflows required to run events at scale.
The result was a product direction that was simpler for users without ignoring the operational complexity underneath it.
The Result
The MADE Hoops redesign created a clearer foundation for some of the platform’s most important customer journeys.
We:
Simplified the registration experience, particularly on mobile.
Improved clarity across scheduling and transactional flows.
Created stronger continuity between discovering an event, registering, and participating in it.
Established clearer product requirements and priorities for future development.
More importantly, the work helped shift the conversation from “How do we improve this screen?” to “How should this entire experience work?”
That shift allowed us to design not just a better registration flow, but a more cohesive foundation for the MADE Hoops digital event experience.
